Trump had done away with the spire atop his hotel and condominium tower after 9-11. Mayor Richard Daley asked him to return to the original plans and it looks like "The Donald" is seriously considering it, only this time the spire will be taller, given the Trump Tower the height it needs to be the tallest building in the US. There is a difference between a "hard" loft, which is a conversion of an aged factory or warehouse and a "soft" loft; a newly constructed loft which are really nothing more than a Condo with high ceilings. These are examples of how Chicago condo developers are cashing in on the popularity of lofts in Chicago. This is not to say that these are not great units because they are, they are just not "true" lofts. A true loft has a harder edge to it consisting of either concrete construction, or "mill" construction , exposing brick and original wood posts, beams and floors. It's the height that helps give a loft the feeling of space, so ceilings should be in excess of ten feet high. The ceilings are usually unfinished with pipes and heating ducts exposed. True lofts will more than likey consist of a kitchen and bath with the remainder as one large living area to be used as the resident sees fit.
